If it’s stressful for a wedding photographer such as myself to find their own dream wedding photographer, how much more overwhelming it must be for someone who isn’t! It can be overwhelming if you don’t know where to start looking. So, to make it easier for you, I’m sharing my top tips on how to find your dream wedding photographer.
It’s important to me that you know what your options are because there are many different styles of wedding photographers. I really encourage you to do your research to pinpoint what your favorite style is!
If you don’t know what style of photography you’re looking for then you should find your top 5 favorite images in the “#weddingphotographer” tag on Instagram. After you find them, look at what they all have in common so you can narrow down your favorite style!
After you have narrowed down your favorite style, I would start searching local and regional hashtags. I’m in Austin, Texas, so some of the hashtags I would search on Instagram in order to find my dream wedding photographer would be #austinweddingphotographer, #texasweddingphotographer. What’s also great is that this technique is still relevant even if you’re doing a destination wedding!
“Do photographers travel for weddings out of state?” Yes! Honestly, to travel is every photographer’s dream, but expect to pay for travel unless the photographer will already be in that area (which can happen too!).
Now, here is the most important advice I have given you so far… SET UP A TIME TO MEET OR HAVE A PHONE CALL! Sorry for all caps, but this is so crucial to the decision process! Even if it seems like a ton of effort, it’s worth the time. Think about it, this is someone who is going to act as a second coordinator and follow you around all day!
You want to work with someone who is passionate, knowledgeable, personable, and responsible. A time to meet or have a phone call will be where you can go over the contract together, talk about any concerns you have, get to know your photographer better, and have them answer your questions. Although email is easy, you don’t really get a full sense of someone’s personality through a screen.
If you feel overwhelmed at first, don’t give up! Finding the right photographer is worth it, I promise! Don’t forget that you only have one wedding day, and these are the images that will be passed down for generations to come.
